God Is Our Rock

God is our rock. Learn the characteristics of rocks that God displays and how they are helpful to us in times of need.

God Is Our Rock

“No one is holy like the LORD! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” 1 Samuel 2:2 (NLT)

We are living in a time where so much is going on around us. It’s a world of change, unsettling events and circumstances, and things going awry all around. We face disturbing political conditions, natural disasters, crime, death, racial tensions, unstable economies, moral corruption and breakdown, and the list could go on and on. Quite honestly it’s pretty depressing. We need something steady and calm to ground us in times like these. We need a firm foundation in a shifty world.

Quite honestly the same could probably be said for many generations. I’m sure they felt much the same in biblical times as well. So, we can lean on the same principles that gave them rest and peace in unsettling times. One such principle is that God is our rock. He is strong, dependable, never shifting or changing, always there to protect and shield us from the storms of this world.

Here are some of the characteristics of rocks that help us understand how God is our rock:

Rocks are strong, solid, and hard to move.

God is our rock that is strong and solid. He also never changes. Because of this we can always rely on him. When things are shifty around us, we can lean on God for support. When things around us change, we can seek Him for direction because He never will.

“For who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is a solid rock?” Psalm 18:31 (NLT)

“Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.” James 1:17 (NLT)

“I am the LORD, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed.” Malachi 3:6 (NLT)

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 (NLT)

“Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.” Psalm 24:8 (NIV)

Rocks can be sharp and used to cut things.

God is our rock that is sharp. He can cut through the negative circumstances in our life and in our world. His word can be used to cut through our soul and spirit. He can cut out things from inside of us that don’t need to be there.

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)

Rocks are everlasting.

God is our rock that is eternal, longsuffering, and always faithful. We can always count on him to be there.

“Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD God is the eternal Rock.” Isaiah 26:4 (NLT)

“He is the Rock; his deeds are perfect. Everything he does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright he is!” Deuteronomy 32:4 (NLT)

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.” Isaiah 40:28 (NIV)

“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” Deuteronomy 7:9 (NIV)

Rocks can serve as weapons.

God is our rock that will fight for us. He and his word can also serve as our weapon. If we are in a battle or need to fight something, we can go to God and the bible for help.

“A psalm of David. Praise the LORD, who is my rock. He trains my hands for war and gives my fingers skill for battle.” Psalm 144:1 (NLT)

“Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.” Deuteronomy 3:22 (NIV)

“Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:17 (NLT)

Rocks can serve as a place of protection or refuge.

God is our rock that will protect us if we are in danger or trouble, and he will hide us when necessary.

“The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.” Psalm 18:2 (NLT)

“Turn your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe.” Psalm 31:2 (NLT)

“He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.” Psalm 62:2 (NLT)

“Be my rock of safety where I can always hide. Give the order to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.” Psalm 71:3 (NLT)

“Be to me a rock of habitation to which I may continually come; You have given commandment to save me, For You are my rock and my fortress.” Psalm 71:3 (NASB)

“But the LORD is my fortress; my God is the mighty rock where I hide.” Psalm 94:22 (NLT)

Rocks are a safe and strong foundation to build upon.

God is our rock that will be our foundation. We can build our lives on God and his principles to keep us strong and grounded, outlasting any storm.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25 (NIV)

Rocks are used in building.

Jesus is also our rock—a cornerstone (a base joining two walls, bearing their weights). He is our base joining us to God, binding us together, and bearing our weights in life.

“Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” 1 Peter 2:7 (NIV)

“Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” Psalm 55:22 (ESV)

“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (NLT)

“For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity–the man Christ Jesus.” 1 Timothy 2:5 (NLT)

Rocks symbolized a source of provision to the Hebrews in biblical times.

God is our rock that will provide for us in times of need. In Moses’ time God caused water to come out of a rock when the Israelites needed water. God will also provide for us when we have a need.

“I will stand before you on the rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. Then the people will be able to drink.” So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out as the elders looked on.” Exodus 17:6 (NLT)

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 (NIV)

“And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” 2 Corinthians 9:8 (NLT)

Rocks can be used to sharpen swords and other weapons.

God is our rock that will sharpen us and make us more effective.

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14 (NLT)

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” Philippians 1:6 (NLT)
